The stone chancel screen was commissioned in 1377 by Edmund Mortimer, the grandson of Edward III, in memory of his child bride Philippa, Richard II's cousin. Their marriage when she was 12, and he was 16, was a Plantagenet alliance that would have a formative influence on English history and what was to become The War of the Roses.
