Finchingfield - St John the Baptist Interior

Like the chancel arch, the octagonal piers of the south aisle arcade are 13th century. Under the chancel arch is a beautifully and elabortately carved screen. The screen of the south chantry chapel [above, right] housing the Berners tomb chest has a 14th century carved screen. Along the top of the screen the fourteenth century medieval wood worker has carved some quirky figures including a gryphon, a half-human winged lion, and end figures playing a double recorder and bagpipes
