Little Leighs - St John: Lion Spandrell
This fourteenth century carved spandrel contains the image of a lion. Lions had many symbolic meanings, mostly to do with Christ, but also representing the power of the King, wisdom, and justice. In this case roses are growing from out of the mouth of the lion. Roses were symbols of divinity in Marian worship - so the meaning could refer to the spread of Christian obedience under the rule of the Divine King.
